As we learned last month, the Big Beautiful Bill just passed the House and now it’s heading to the Senate. If you’re a tip worker, 1099 contractor, or small business owner in North Carolina, you need to know what this could mean for your taxes. We’ve been digging into the details here at Gibson Tax in Asheboro, and there’s some serious money on the table.
No Tax on Tips: Actual Cash Back
The Big Beautiful Bill finally makes “no tax on tips” real. According to the House Ways and Means Committee analysis, tipped workers could save $1,700 annually. Servers, bartenders, hairdressers, and delivery drivers—your tips would be exempt from federal income tax.
You’ll still pay Social Security and Medicare taxes on tips, though, since those fund your future benefits.
1099 Contractors Get Relief
Ok, 1099 contractors, this one’s big for you. The bill kills that annoying 1099-K reporting rule that would’ve meant you report every Venmo and PayPal transaction over $600. Instead, they’re raising the 1099-MISC threshold to $2,000, and also increasing the threshold for third-party settlement organizations to $20,000 and 200 transactions. In a nutshell, less paperwork headaches for everyone.
The real win? Section 199A small business deduction goes from 20 percent to 23 percent and becomes permanent, according to official analysis. That’s nearly a quarter of your qualified business income you can write off.
Small Businesses Win
Small businesses get 100 percent immediate expensing for equipment. Need a new truck, computer system, or machinery? Write off the entire purchase this year instead of depreciating it over several years. Cash flow game-changer.
Overtime Goes Tax-Free
If you work overtime regularly, you could save up to $1,750 annually. Your regular 40 hours still get taxed normally, but overtime hours would be exempt from federal income tax.
What Happens Next?
Senate’s got a July 4th deadline, with negotiations happening now. The good news? Core benefits for tip workers, contractors, and small businesses have strong support and should survive.
Time to Get Ready
The Big Beautiful Bill could mean thousands in tax savings, but you need to be prepared. Whether you earn tips, work 1099, or own a business, getting professional help means you won’t miss anything.
